Why You Should Ditch Towel Drying Your Hair

Great hair starts in the shower. A lot of women would splurge on high-end shampoo and conditioner in the hopes of having healthy, beautiful and shiny hair. But if you still end up with frizzy and damaged hair despite your efforts, it’s probably what you do next that’s wreaking havoc on your hair.

Most people would reach for a bath towel after stepping out of the shower. They use the same towel to dry their face, body, and hair. Some would rub their hair with a towel to get rid of excess moisture. Others would wrap their head in a towel, allowing it to absorb excess moisture while getting ready and doing their makeup. We’ve gotten so accustomed to doing these things that a lot of people think that towel drying is normal. But the truth is this habit can do more harm than good for your hair.

Although, bath towels are ideal for damp skin, drying your hair with a regular towel is the worst thing you can do to your strands. Our hair is at its weakest when it is wet. It is more elastic and more likely to break, making it more susceptible to damage. Frequent rubbing and tugging will only make it weaker.

Regular bath towels aren’t meant for drying your hair. Vigorously rubbing your hair with a towel creates friction and can damage the cuticle. This increases the frizziness of your hair, leaving you with an end result that is anything but sexy. Plus, it causes your hair strands to rub against one another, causing hair to split, break and even fall out.

The way you dry your hair can have a significant effect on your hair’s health. If you’re one of the towel dryers out there, ditch this habit ASAP. Instead of instinctively reaching for a towel to dry your hair, opt for a cotton shirt or a microfiber towel instead. Remember, you don’t need to rub or scrunch at all. Just give it a gentle squeeze to absorb excess water.
