Tips for Preventing Split Ends

We’ve all suffered from split ends at some point. Often, this is brought about by a number of factors like frequent washing, styling, chemical treatments and other factors. Over time, your hair may end up dry, brittle and damaged. This makes your hair more susceptible to split ends and breakage.

Here are some tips for preventing split ends.

Limit the use of heat styling tools

Most women use hot tools like curling iron, flat iron and blow dryers for styling their hair. However, frequent use of these tools can leave your hair dry and brittle; thus, making it more prone to split ends and breakage.

To keep your hair healthy, we suggest that you limit the use of heat styling tools. This is especially important if you have fine, thin or dry locks. Let your hair dry naturally as much as possible. For days when you really need to use hot tools, it is best to apply heat protectant first.

Use a wide-toothed comb

Dry and damaged hair is more prone to tangling. Combing your hair may seem like the easiest way to untangle the knots. However, tugging it down will only lead to breakage. When you encounter a tangle, apply a leave-in conditioner to moisturize your hair. Then, use a wide-toothed comb to detangle your hair. Start from the ends and work your way up to the roots.

Dry hair gently

Our hair is at its weakest when it is dry. Rubbing your hair vigorously with a towel will not only cause major frizz, it can also lead to split ends. Use a microfiber towel or an old t-shirt to dry your hair to prevent damage. Squeeze your hair gently to get rid of excess water and allow it to dry naturally.

Get regular trims

The only way to get rid of split ends is to cut your hair. Now that you’ve gotten rid of split ends, we suggest that you get a trim every 6 to 8 weeks. This will keep your hair healthy and prevent split ends at the same time. Also, incorporate protein treatment into your hair care regimen to make your hair stronger and prevent breakage.
