How Does Diet Affect Your Hair Health?

Most people think that the use of shampoo, conditioner and other hair care products are enough to achieve healthy, gorgeous hair. What they fail to realize is that diet plays an important role in one’s overall health. In fact, your hair is a reflection of your overall health.

It’s normal to experience bad hair day every now and then. But if you find yourself dealing with bad hair day almost every day, this is an indication that your hair isn’t in great shape. There are several reasons why people have dull, dry and unhealthy hair. Poor diet is one of the major causes.

Just like your body, your hair is affected by the food you eat. If you feed your body with junk foods, sweets, and processed foods, odds are you have dull, lifeless hair and dry scalp. Some people even experience hair loss due to the lack of vitamins and minerals. No matter how expensive your hair products are or how religious you are in applying them, these products won’t be of any good if you don’t feed your body with the necessary minerals and nutrients to keep your hair strong and healthy.

Our hair needs vitamins and minerals to grow. Obviously, these are taken from the foods you eat. Your hair is one of the fastest growing tissues in the body. In fact, it grows at a rate of .5 inch each month.  Dry, dull and brittle hair is often a sign of potential nutritional deficiencies. When you’re not getting enough nutrients, it shows through your hair.

To achieve lustrous, healthy hair, it needs a combination of nutrients such as vitamin E, copper, selenium, magnesium, iron, protein and fatty acids. They all work together to grow a healthy head of hair that is shiny and easy to care for. That said, we recommend that you maintain a healthy diet. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and protein-rich foods into your daily diet. Biotin and Omega-3 fatty acids are also good for your hair and nails.
