Frequent washing

Experts recommend washing your hair at least 2 to 3 times a week. If you wash more than that, then you’re washing away your scalp’s natural oils.

Your hair doesn’t produce oil. Rather, it relies on your scalp for lubrication. It keeps your strands moisturized and looking lustrous. Your scalp produces less oil to moisturize your scalp and hair as you age. This means you’re more susceptible to dry your hair as you get older.

Instead of washing your hair every day, we recommend that you shampoo less frequently. Also, use a mild shampoo. Harsh shampoos can strip away your hair’s natural oils.

Blow drying your hair too often

Blow drying can speed up the drying process and help tame your hair.  However, frequent use of heat styling tools can suck up the moisture off of your strands. Air-dry your hair on some days to give it some chance to recover. If you must really use heated tools like a flat iron or a curling iron, make sure that you use a heat protectant beforehand. This will protect your hair from heat damage. Also, apply light oil on your hair afterwards to nourish your strands.

Not conditioning often enough

Simple habits like frequent washing and heat styling can dry out your hair. As such, we highly recommend that you condition your hair after washing to prevent lifeless, straw-like locks. This will not only leave you with soft and shiny hair, it will also nourish your strands and provide it with much needed moisture. For best results, deep condition your hair at least once a week.

Hot shower

Nothing is better than taking hot showers, particularly during the cold winter months. Some would even turn the nozzle as hot as it will go. There is no denying that hot showers can be relaxing. However, steamy water can actually dry out your locks. If you want to keep your hair looking its best, wash and rinse with lukewarm water. Or better yet, rinse with cool water to seal cuticles and lock in moisture.
